YouMail

What is YouMail?

YouMail is a cloud-based visual voicemail and call management service that enhances traditional voicemail by offering features like voicemail-to-text transcription, personalized greetings, and robust spam call blocking.

YouMail replaces standard carrier voicemail by using conditional call forwarding, allowing users to access their messages across various devices, including smartphones, tablets, and computers . YouMail also offers the following tools:

  • Block unwanted calls (especially spam, scam, or robocalls).
  • Screen unknown callers with customizable voicemail or call filtering.
  • Tag phone numbers with spam labels using crowd-sourced and algorithmic data.
  • Report telemarketing numbers to broader industry databases (used by carriers and apps like Hiya, TNS, etc.).

Potential impact:

Factor Impact on Telemarketing Calls
Spam Labeling If your number is flagged by YouMail users, it can get labeled as "Scam Likely," "Spam Risk," or blocked outright.
Call Blocking YouMail uses an "out-of-service" tone that tricks autodialers into thinking the number is disconnected, causing you to waste dials.
Crowdsourced Data Numbers that generate complaints through YouMail are added to shared databases that affect carrier-level spam filters.
Call Screening Consumers with call screening enabled may send your calls straight to voicemail unless you're in their contacts or white-listed.
Voicemail Transcription Your pitch or message gets converted to text, making it easier for consumers to judge and ignore your offer.

Why This Matters

YouMail doesn’t just protect the consumer—it feeds call reputation data back into the ecosystem. This data is often used by:

  • Carriers (Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile)
  • Apps (Hiya, TNS, RoboKiller)
  • Analytics Services that label or block outbound calls

That means if you're calling with high volume, short call durations, low answer rates or improper attestation you’re more likely to be flagged, which can cause poor connectivity, lower conversion rates, and more missed leads.

Viewing Your Caller ID YouMail Scores

Your NumberVerifier account includes YouMail scoring so you can monitor how your calls are categorized within YouMail's system.

Instructions:

  1. Navigate to the YouMail menu item on the left hand side of your screen.
  2. You will then see the scoring by campaign broken down into the last 24 hours, last 30 days and last 90 days.

Scoring Overview:

YouMail's scoring system assigns a percentage indicating how likely a phone number is involved in certain behavior, for instance, an Unlawful score of 85% means there is an 85% change the number is tied to illegal behavior.

The following categories are used:

  • Fraud - high probability of deceptive schemes (e.g. impersonating the IRS or banks)
  • Unlawful - broader policy based infractions (e.g, such as DNC violations, spoofing, TCPA non-compliance, etc
  • Spam / Other - general unwanted calls - often based on crowd feedback but don't meet criteria for fraud.
